Pitching Your Story to the Media
Pitching your story to the media is not hard but it requires you think through the pitch before picking up the phone.
Here are a few secrets to pitching a good story:
- Be concise. Tell them quickly what the facts are, why they are important and why their audience will find the story interesting.
- Have the key 'angle' worked out in advance. Reduce the point of the story to one sentence.
- Say something. Journalists are after news - give them something that is newsworthy.
- Describe possible pictures. A good photo op. will dramatically improve your chances of being included.
- Offer an 'exclusive'. If you need to do this to get them over the line make sure you honour your deal.
- Provide reasearch help. Provide facts and figures and assist putting them in touch with other people relevant to the story.
- Don't be disappointed There are so many factors that will decide whether you are accepted, many well beyond your control.
Remember the media is hungry for content to fill up the gaps between the advertising. Use this to your advantage.
